![]() The main storyline from the 2016-2020 dunk contests though was Aaron Gordon, who, after being the consensus winner by fans both times he competed, lost both, losing to Zach Lavine in 2016 and Derrick Jones Jr. The dunk contest was still great in the 2010’s, with Blake Griffin’s iconic dunk over a Kia in 2011, Jeremy Evans dunk over Kevin Hart in 2012 and Donovan Mitchell’s dunk tribute to Vince Carter in 2018. The 2008 dunk contest was a great dunk contest because of Dwight Howard, who won it while taking off his jersey and revealing a Superman costume for the dunk. The 2007 dunk contest is always known to be iconic, with Jordan, Bryant, Erving, Carter and more as the judges, and it finished off with a great contest, as Gerald Green jumped over Nate Robinson for the title. The 2000’s was a great decade for the contest, with Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady and Steve Francis, three all time great athletic wings in the middle of their primes, all going at it in the mid 2000’s. History continued to be made as well, as Nate Robinson at 5’9 won the dunk contest a record three times. The dunk contest continued to be fun, with Kobe Bryant winning it in his 2nd year in the NBA in 1997. Who knew his son would become an all star and a long time impactful NBA player in the future? The contest also featured Cowboys Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin, Vikings Hall of Fame receiver Cris Carter, MLB all time home run leader Barry Bonds, Falcons Hall of Fame cornerback Deion “Primetime” Sanders, and more! While there were other Foot Locker dunk contests, this one is always remembered due to its crazy amount of talent. It featured someone close, gold winning track medalist Mike Conley Sr., participated in the competition. Something that not a lot of people know about the dunk contest is Foot Lockers 1992 Dunk Contest. ![]() However, no one can take away the fact that Jordan dunked the ball from the free throw line, in what is considered one of the most insane plays ever in sports, to create the logo to one of the most popular brands in the world, Air Jordan. And the reason why they call this controversial was because the contest was taken place in Chicago, and some of the judges had key connections to Chicago. One, it is considered one of the most controversial dunk contests of all time, with Wilkins receiving a score of 45 on his amazing third round dunk, and Jordan getting a 50 on his, to win him the contest. That ‘88 dunk contest was maybe the craziest in NBA history for multiple reasons. Julius Erving was taken down by Larry Nance in ‘84, Dominique Wilkins won in ‘85, 5 foot six Spud Webb made history, winning the 1986 dunk contest, before Michael Jordan won back-to-back in 19. In 1984, the NBA made the Slam Dunk Contest a permanent activity at the All Star game, and the 1980’s was maybe the best decade for the dunk contest. Because of the dunk contest, the NBA invested money into non-breakable backboards (until Shaquille O’Neal said they were breakable), to make dunking legal in the NBA after being banned for 10 seasons. They would do different dunk competitions at halftime of games, with many future Hall of Famers participating: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Moses Malone, Elvin Hayes, Erving, Gervin, Thompson and Alex English. The next season, considered the first ever dunk contest, had high expectations, and they lived up to it. And between two of the most energetic players to attack the rim in NBA history in Erving and Gervin, Erving took it with the first edition of the iconic free throw line dunk. Everybody needed to make a dunk from 10 feet out, which is inside the paint. The participants featured Artis Gilmore, Larry Kenon, David Thompson, George Gervin and Julius Erving.
